Van tyre accident highlights need for checks

18th April 2012

The case of a van that caught fire after one of its tyres burst has served as a timely reminder of the importance of checking vehicle compounds regularly.

According to a report in The York Press, the accident occurred as the van was travelling down one of the busiest roads in North Yorkshire.

Travelling at around 6pm this past Monday (April 16th) evening, the burst tyre caused havoc, with the subsequent blow out causing the wheel drum to overheat with the vehicle then overheating and catching fire as a result.

The resulting mess left the Mercedes Sprinter van stuck on the southbound section of the A1 and virtually beyond repair.

Firefighters were soon called to the scene, with no one hurt as a result of the blaze. Despite this though, much of the drama could have been prevented if the motorist in question had examined his vehicles tyres on a regular basis.

Failing that, a trip to a tyre fitting and MOT centre could have provided some professional help to deal with any similar situation.
