British motorists should ensure they fit their car with cold weather tyres even if there is no snow this winter, according to Volkswagen.
Many drivers believe that the UK is rarely cold enough for winter tyres, but with average temperatures regularly dipping below seven degrees Celsius across Britain, cold weather tyres offer improved performance over their summer counterparts.
"The message we want to get across is that you don't need snow to make the most of winter tyres," said Volkswagen UK parts marketing manager Eric Ekins.
"In fact, once the mercury hits seven degrees Celsius or below, winter tyres tend to outperform their summer counterparts with greater grip for acceleration, cornering and braking."
Conventional tyres become more rigid at low temperatures but the winter compounds remain flexible and therefore offer better grip and traction.
Winter tyres can reduce braking distances by up to 11m in icy conditions and by approximately 8m on snowy roads, according to safety body Tyresafe.org.
