UK drivers have been urged to invest in winter tyres now before the cold weather hits.
In an interview with the Telegraph, David Smith, UK managing director of tyre manufacturer Continental, advised British motorists to prepare well in advance for poor driving conditions this winter.
He told the news provider: "After the weather much of the UK has enjoyed recently, cold, wet, or icy roads may not seem an imminent threat but motorists need to think ahead and decide now if they want the added safety that winter tyres bring."
Mr Smith added that winter tyres are gradually becoming more prevalent in the UK, with 500,000 set to be sold in 2011-2012.
A recent study by Continental found that two thirds of UK drivers do not know the minimum legal tread depth, while 40 per cent of drivers have never checked the tread depth of their tyres.
More worryingly, a fifth of UK drivers do not know how to check the depth of their tyres.
