Michelin: Grit shortage highlights need for winter tyres

10th November 2011

Winter tyres are even more important this year as council's slash their road safety budgets, according to Michelin.

Recent reports have revealed that many local authorities across the UK are cutting their budgets for services such as salting, gritting and snowploughing, with some councils forecast to reduce their spending by as much as 30 per cent compared to last year.

In light of this, the French tyre giant has underlined the benefits of using cold weather tyres, which reduce braking distance and improve handling on snowy and icy roads.
Jianni Geras, Michelin's head of car marketing, hopes drivers "get the message" about the positive impact of winter tyres.

He said: "With people visiting relatives and heading off on winter breaks and ski holidays it makes sense to do everything in your power to ensure you get to your destination safely and not to take any chances with missing flights or ferries."

Cold weather tyres feature special rubber compounds which ensures the tread stays soft and flexible when the temperature drops below eight degrees Celsius.
