Sales of winter tyres have quadrupled in the run-up to the 2011/12 cold season, with ATS Euromaster seeing particularly strong demand from both fleet managers and private motorists.
As awareness of the benefits offered by cold weather tyres increases, so too does their sales, with figures for the period from September to November 2011 showing a significant increase in uptake, especially in areas of the country already suffering as a result of snow and ice.
During this time frame, there was a 301 per cent increase in the number of winter tyres fitted to ATS customers' vehicles, including cars, 4x4s and vans.
ATS Euromaster group marketing director Huw Williams says: "This year we worked hard to secure significantly more stock and it's enabled us to meet the exceptionally strong demand.
"If the current snowfall drifts further south, then availability could change overnight. Our advice remains to secure any cold weather tyres you require now."
Winter tyres are made from a compound that is more effective at temperatures of seven degrees Celsius, as well as tread patterns designed to cope better with snow and ice.
