UK motorists should gain a greater understanding of their car's acceleration and power to keep safe this winter, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
Simon Elstow, driver training specialist for the IAM's Drive & Survive campaign, claimed that power and acceleration are "no good" if they are not used in a controlled manner with expert use of the brakes.
He said: "Wintery conditions don't necessarily mean you can't go out, but if weather conditions are very hazardous, do question whether you really need to make the journey.
"Understanding your car's acceleration and power will help you stay in control whatever the weather."
Mr Elstow urged drivers to accelerate smoothly and maintain a safe speed while driving in wintery conditions, even keeping below the speed limit when conditions are extremely poor.
Car hire website carrentals.co.uk recently advised British drivers to switch over to cold weather tyres as soon as possible in order to reduce the chance of any accidents.
