A new service has been launched in Suffolk which reminds motorists of their MoT expiry date.
The system, which has been developed by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, will send a message to a driver's mobile phone when their MOT is due so they can avoid a £60 fixed penalty notice.
Sgt Clare Mowson of the roads policing unit, said: "It is not uncommon for motorists receiving a fixed penalty notice for having no MOT to tell us that they were not aware that it had expired.
"Although this is obviously easily done it is not an excuse and this service is a great way of ensuring the date is not forgotten."
In order to apply for the service, UK drivers need to supply a UK-registered mobile phone number, car details and their vehicle's latest MOT test number.
Users will then receive a text reminder of their MoT expiry date on three separate occasions before it is due to run out.
ATS Euromaster also offer a free text message reminder service to its customers making remembering those important dates even easier.
