Drivers opting to fit winter tyres will face no extra charge on their motor insurance, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
The confirmation follows weeks of uncertainty among car owners keen to ensure safe driving in the icy conditions through the installation of winter compounds.
Recent years have seen an increasing number of drivers turn to winter tyres in a bid to combat the increasingly cold and icy conditions seen from November through to February.
The ABI represents 90 per cent of the car insurance industry and was keen to reassure and encourage drivers to use the compounds.
Nick Starling, ABI's director of general insurance, said: “Insurers do not want to penalise motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads."
Mr Starling hoped that the comments would help to clarify that the ABI fully endorsed the use of these tyres but he did warn that the rules would not cover fitting new wheels.
