Truck Services

What You Should Know

The inspection service has been developed to help reduce the risk and frequency of tyre related breakdowns.

Regular fleet checks are designed to support an employer’s Duty of Care responsibilities and help to protect the company’s Operator License, whilst also ensuring that all tyres comply with C&U regulations. Regular checks also help to reduce the risk of tyre related breakdowns and allow you to actively follow a programme of good tyre husbandry.

The inspection service has been created to ensure vehicle downtime is kept to a minimum. We will work with you and identify the most suitable preventative inspection options, based on budgetary and service requirements.

Benefits of Fleet Inspections:

  • Promoting safety
    • Support with duty of care to employees and other road users
    • Helps safeguard Operator's License
    • Ensures that tyres comply with C&U regulations
  • Keeping vehicles moving
    • Reduce the risk of customer's tyre related breakdowns
    • Fulfillment of own customers requirements
    • Adherence to tyre policy
  • Ensuring value for money
    • Opportunity to actually manage expenditure
    • Good tyre husbandry is applied
    • Adherence to tyre policy

What you should know

When done at the right time, twinning and turn on the rim together can increase your mileage performance by up to 20%. These services, when performed regularly, will also facilitate regrooving and remoulding.

Safety is also increased by achieving:

  • Better grip
  • Better traction
  • Shorter braking distance

Twinning and turn on the rim can increase mileage and improve safety

What you should know

Other benefits of regrooving are:

  • Correctly regrooved tyres can also be retreaded
  • A regrooved tyre has reduced rolling resistance by up to 25% compared with a new tyre, which means lower fuel comsumption
  • Regrooving will improve the tyres grip and safety
  • A regrooved tyre can be fitted on every axle

ATS Euromaster recommends that the tyre is regrooved when there is 3 to 4mm of remaining tread depth.

Regrooving is not recommended if the tyre shows major damage such as multiple holes and cuts or places where the tread has been torn off.

WHEEL ALIGNMENT

What you should know

Correctly aligned wheels offer cost saving through:

  • Optimised tyre mileage - Incorrect alignment is one of the main causes of tyre wear - 1mm misalignment decreases tyre mileage performance by 7%
  • Reduced mechanical wear - When wheels or axles are not aligned, mechanical parts are subject to increased stress and premature wear, for example suspension components and bearings, increasing vehicle maintenance cost and down time.
  • Fuel savings - Rolling resistance from the tyre increases if alignment is not correctly adjusted - Correctly adjusted alignment will reduce fuel consumption and running costs
  • Safety improvements - Vehicle handling, safety and driver comfort also depend on the wheel and axle alignment

REMEMBER...
ATS Euormaster technicians are trained to recognise tyre wear patterns associated with faulty alignments.

WHEEL BALANCING

Balancing overcomes wheel vibrations and ensures a more comfortable drive.

The advantages of well balanced tyres are:

  • Better mileage thanks to an even tyre wear
  • Greater comfort for the driver
  • Reduced wear on all components (pivot axle, connecting rod) due to less vibration.
  • Reduced vibration to electronic system

REMEMBER...
Some vibrations are present but are not felt in the cab, either because of the vibration frequency or because they are absorbed by the vehicle.

TYRE REPAIR

What you should know

All tyre repairs at ATS Euromaster are completed to the latest British Standard BS 159 and the conditions for tyre repair are strictly governed.

Tyres subject to the following kinds of damage are not repairable:

  • Visible or deformed bead wire
  • Rubber or tread separations
  • Deterioration of the tyre caused by grease or corrosive fluid
  • Marking of the interior rubber caused by overheating due to under inflation
  • Damage larger that regulations will allow

REMEMBER...
Tyre repairs will only be carried out following a thorough examination and will always be performed by an ATS Euromaster approved repairer to the appropriate British Standards.

TYRE PRESSURE MAINTENANCE

What you should know

Low pressure can lead to:

  • Higher tyre temperature which increases tyre wear and decreases mileage performance
  • High rolling resistance which increases fuel consumption
  • In extreme cases this can also lead to tyre damage

An over inflated tyre can generate:

  • Increases slip, lower grip
  • Greater wear on the central part of the tyre
  • Altered driving performance
  • Reduced tyre lifetime

Potential costs:

  • If tyre pressure is 20% too low, its mileage performance is reduced by 19% and fuel consumption will increase by 2%
  • If tyre pressure is 20% too high, mileage performance is reduced by 22%

REMEMBER...

Tyre pressure should be checked and adjusted regularly on cold tyres.

What you should know

The correct wheel nut torque is important because it avoids damage to the vehicle and allows the wheel to be removed.

Incorrectly tightened wheel nuts can have serious consequences. If the wheel nuts are too tight:

  • Studs could break and/or become difficult to remove
  • Cracks in the rims, deformation, vibrations
  • Deformed threads
  • Damage to brake discs and/or drums

If the wheel nuts are too loose:

  • Damage to the wheel fixings and/or vehicle hut
  • Damage to the threads
  • Wheel loss

ATS Euromaster use calibrated torque wrenches to achieve the correct tightening to torque.
