Understanding your tyre size

Finding the Right Fit for Your Vehicle
Tyre size markings might look confusing at first, but they follow a precise format. A standard tyre size appears as a sequence like 205/55R16 91V. Each component represents a specific measurement or rating.

  • 205 – The width of the tyre in millimetres.
  • 55 – The aspect ratio, which means the height of the sidewall is 55% of the width.
  • R – Radial construction, the standard for modern tyres.
  • 16 – The wheel diameter in inches.
  • 91 – The load index, indicates the maximum weight the tyre can support.
  • V – The speed rating, represents the highest speed the tyre can safely maintain.

These details are critical for selecting the right tyres. Incorrect tyre sizing affects performance, safety, and even fuel efficiency. When buying tyres online it's vital to ensure you order the correct size tyre for your vehicle. Your vehicle could have numerous different tyre size options which our vehicle reg look up tool will bring back, so it's important you select the correct one.

You can find your current tyre size by looking at the numbers on your current tyre sidewall or in your owner's manual. If you buy the incorrect size your chosen centre or our customer service team will try and rectify this before your appointment.

Tyres for All Budgets

We have great connections with all the major tyre manufacturers, and as part of the Michelin group, we are confident we have the right car, SUV or van tyres for you. Whether you are looking for Budget, Mid-range premium tyres or if you need specific tyres for your vehicle such as run flat or winter tyres we’ve got you covered. We stock all the major brands including Michelin, Pirelli, Goodyear, Continental, Dunlop, Avon and more which are all available to buy online. We also have a wide range of affordable budget tyres from the likes of Yartu, Leao and more.

Choosing the right balance between price and value starts with evaluating the key performance factors: tread life, wet and dry traction, and fuel efficiency. Some budget models might have a shorter lifespan compared to premium versions, but they still meet essential safety standards. Looking at independent tyre tests and user reviews can help identify the best options in the lower price range.

Replacing Tyres

How long do new tyres last?

On average, front tyres should last around 20,000 miles before they need to be replaced, while rear tyres can last up to 40,000 miles. However, tyre lifespans can vary depending on frequency of tyre maintenance, the road conditions and terrain you drive on, and the quality of the tyre.

Which tyres wear out first?

Typically, your front tyres will wear out before your rear tyres. Your front tyres move more quickly than the rear tyres and carry the majority of the weight of your vehicle. They also tend to take the brunt of any impacts, so they're usually quicker to wear down.

Should you replace all tyres at once?

Generally, it's recommended that you replace tyres in pairs. You should replace both of your front tyres at the same time, and it's the same with your rear tyres. This is because replacing just one tyre may cause uneven tyre wear or lack of grip if your tyres have different tread patterns. For some 4-wheel-drive vehicles, it may be best to replace all four tyres at once. If you're unsure about how to replace your tyres, reach out to your manufacturer or contact one of our tyre specialists at your local ATS centre.

Should all 4 of your tyres be the same brand?

We recommend sticking to the same brand for all four tyres of your car. It's not illegal to use different brands of tyres for your car, but this can have a negative impact on your car's performance. Mixing different tread patterns or tread depths can cause an imbalance in grip and even affect steering and acceleration.

Original Equipment Tyres

As we have strong relationships with all the major tyre manufacturers we have access to original equipment tyres. This means we can replace your tyres with the same ones your vehicle came off the production line with.

No matter what make or model of vehicle we will be able to find the best tyres for your vehicle. At ATS Euromaster, we stock a wide range of car tyres for different makes & models of vehicle. These include:

Homologated Tyres

In some cases, tyre manufacturers make specific tyres for certain makes and models of vehicles, which are approved by the vehicle manufacturer. These are known as homologated tyres.

When browsing tyres you will be able to see whether or not they are homologated by looking for the vehicle icon in our tyre results.

You will also be able to see specific letters on the sidewall of your tyres. For example

  • Audi - AO
  • BMW/Mercedes – MO
  • Jaguar – J
  • Land Rover - LR
  • Maserati - MGT
  • Mercedes-Benz - MO, MO1
  • Porsche - NO, N1, N2
  • Tesla - TO

Tyre legal tread depth requirements for tyre.

If your car tyres don’t meet the minimum legal standards for tread depth, they’ll be less effective than a newer set. As a result, braking distance will be longer and grip will be reduced, to the extent that your tyres will be deemed unsafe for use on the road.

Your car will fail its MOT if your tyres have less than the legal requirement of tread depth. By driving on the roads with tyres that do not meet the legal standards, you could risk a fine of up to £2,500 and up to 3 points on your driving license for each tyre below the limit.

The minimum legal tread depth for tyres in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. In simple terms, that means if the tyre stands less than 1.6 mm above the central trenches that run across the tyre, it is not considered roadworthy.

A simple test to check your tyre tread is to use a 20p coin. If the outer band of the coin is visible when placed in the trench, then the treads of your tyres are worn below the legal limit and as such need to be replaced to be considered road-legal.
