Understanding your tyre size

Finding the Right Fit for Your Vehicle
Tyre size markings might look confusing at first, but they follow a precise format. A standard tyre size appears as a sequence like 205/55R16 91V. Each component represents a specific measurement or rating.

  • 205 – The width of the tyre in millimetres.
  • 55 – The aspect ratio, which means the height of the sidewall is 55% of the width.
  • R – Radial construction, the standard for modern tyres.
  • 16 – The wheel diameter in inches.
  • 91 – The load index, indicates the maximum weight the tyre can support.
  • V – The speed rating, represents the highest speed the tyre can safely maintain.

These details are critical for selecting the right tyres. Incorrect tyre sizing affects performance, safety, and even fuel efficiency. When buying tyres online it's vital to ensure you order the correct size tyre for your vehicle. Your vehicle could have numerous different tyre size options which our vehicle reg look up tool will bring back, so it's important you select the correct one.

You can find your current tyre size by looking at the numbers on your current tyre sidewall or in your owner's manual. If you buy the incorrect size your chosen centre or our customer service team will try and rectify this before your appointment.

New Tyre FAQs

Tyre prices vary by size, brand and specification, from around £50 for budget car tyres to £300+ for premium brands. Our online prices include fitting which comprises of valve, balance and disposal.

UK law requires 1.6mm tread depth across the central three-quarters of the tyre. We recommend replacing tyres at 3mm for optimal safety

While legal, we recommend using the same brand and tread pattern on each axle for optimal performance and safety. Mixing brands can affect handling and grip.

All our online tyre prices include professional fitting, wheel balancing, new valve (where required) and environmentally friendly disposal of your old tyres.

All tyres come with the manufacturer’s guarantee plus our optional MasterService Tyre Warranty for additional peace of mind against puncture

On average, front tyres last around 20,000 miles before they need to be replaced, rear tyres up to 40,000 miles. However, tyre lifespans can vary depending on tyre maintenance, road conditions and terrain you drive on, vehicle model and quality of the tyre.

Typically, your front tyres will wear out before your rear tyres. Your front tyres move faster than the rear tyres and carry the majority of the weight of your vehicle. They also take the brunt of any impacts so they’re usually quicker to wear down.

We generally recommend replacing tyres in pairs—both front or both rear—to avoid uneven wear and grip issues from mismatched tread patterns. Some 4-wheel-drive vehicles may require all four tyres to be replaced at once. If unsure, consult your vehicle manufacturer or speak to one of our tyre specialists at your local ATS centre.

We recommend using the same brand for all four tyres on your car. It’s not illegal to use different brands of tyres for your car, but this can have a negative impact on your car’s performance. Mixing different tread patterns or tread depths can cause an imbalance in grip and even affect steering and acceleration.
