About our AC Recharge Service

Your car’s air conditioning system loses gas over time, even if it’s working fine. When levels drop, the system becomes less effective, which means it takes longer to cool the cabin and can put more strain on your engine.

Our air con regas service is made to get things back to how they should be. We’ll remove any remaining gas, check the system for leaks, and refill it with the correct refrigerant to your vehicle’s specification. If needed, we’ll also top up the lubricant that keeps components working smoothly.

It’s a quick job — usually done in under an hour — and it can make a big difference to your driving comfort, particularly on warmer days or during long journeys.

How does AC regassing work?

Regassing is the process of removing old refrigerant from your air conditioning system and replacing it with fresh gas. Here’s how it works at ATS Euromaster:

  • We start with a system check, looking for any obvious issues and confirming which refrigerant your vehicle needs.
  • The old gas is removed using specialist equipment.
  • We run a pressure test to help spot any leaks.
  • The system is refilled with the correct type and amount of gas, in line with the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Lubricant is added if needed, to keep seals and components in good condition.

Once the regas is complete, we run a full performance check to make sure the system is delivering cool, clean air as expected. This includes monitoring the pressure, checking the temperature at the vents, and confirming that the compressor cycles on and off correctly. If we spot anything unusual like signs of wear or a drop in efficiency, we’ll let you know straight away.

All work is carried out by qualified technicians using approved tools and OEM-standard gas. Whether your vehicle needs R134a or R1234yf, we’ll use the right product for the job.

What are the signs your AC needs regassing?

If the air from your vents isn’t as cool as it once was, or if you notice musty smells, misty windows or odd noises when the air con is on, your system might need a regas. Some drivers also find their air con stops working properly in traffic, or that their fuel consumption has crept up. These are all common signs that refrigerant levels are low.

In many cases, drivers put off a regas because the change happens gradually. But even small drops in performance can make long drives uncomfortable, especially in warm weather. If it’s been more than two years, or your system has never been checked, it’s worth booking a test. Spotting these signs early can help you avoid more costly repairs later, and restore comfort with just a quick visit to your nearest ATS Euromaster centre.

Why and when to regas your car’s air con

Even in a sealed system, air con gas escapes over time — usually around 10% to 15% a year. That’s why most manufacturers recommend a regas every two years, even if the system still feels cool.

Skipping a recharge doesn’t just mean warmer air in the cabin. Low refrigerant levels make your system work harder, which can lead to increased fuel use and long-term wear. Regular regassing keeps everything running efficiently and helps avoid more expensive repairs later on.

If it’s been a while since your last service, or you’ve noticed any drop in performance, it’s probably time to book.

Tips to take care of your car’s air con all year round

Air conditioning plays a useful role whatever the season. In warmer months, it keeps the cabin cool and comfortable. In winter, it helps to clear condensation quickly and keep your windscreen clear. To keep it in good condition, it’s worth running the system for a few minutes every 2 weeks to keep parts moving and seals from drying out.

It’s also a good habit to clean the vents now and then, and to book a check-up once a year. That way, your system stays efficient, reliable, and ready whenever you need it.

What's included in your AC regas price?

An air con regas at ATS Euromaster covers everything your system needs to get back to full performance. That includes removing the old gas, checking for leaks, and refilling the system with the correct type of refrigerant. If required, we’ll also top up the lubricant to help keep components protected.

Before we finish, we’ll test the system to make sure it’s cooling as it should. All work is carried out by trained technicians using equipment that meets your vehicle’s specifications, so you can drive away with confidence.

Combine air con services for even better results

If your air con is blowing warm or smells musty, it might need more than a regas. At ATS Euromaster, we also offer anti-bacterial treatments to clean out the system and remove odours caused by mould and bacteria. For complete peace of mind, our aircon regas and clean package includes both services in one visit.

You can also combine a recharge with other maintenance services like an oil change, scheduled servicing or a MOT test. Our team will help plan the right options for your car and mileage.

Not sure what your car needs? Our free Digital Vehicle Health Check can help you spot problems early. With flexible booking and nationwide coverage, we make it easy to keep your air con and the rest of your car in top condition.

How long does aircon regas take?

Recharging a car air conditioning system usually takes around 60 minutes.

How do I recharge the air conditioning in a car?

What refrigerant does my car need?

Most cars use either R134a or R1234yf. We’ll check and confirm the right one for your vehicle before we begin the service.

Can I drive without recharging the AC?

Yes, but the system won’t work properly, and low refrigerant can eventually cause wear or damage to key components.

Why does my air con smell?

Smells are often caused by a build-up of bacteria or mould in the system. A regas won’t always fix this, but we offer specialist air con cleaning services too.

Is AC regassing part of an MOT?

No. Air con isn’t checked during an MOT. It’s a separate service, but an important one if you want your system working efficiently.

What if my air con makes a noise?

Strange noises may point to a mechanical issue, like a worn compressor or loose belt. We can take a closer look and advise on the best fix.

Does air con affect fuel economy?

Yes, if it’s low on gas. When refrigerant runs low, the system works harder, which can slightly increase fuel use. A regas helps your air con run more efficiently and reduces strain on the engine.
