How to tell if you have a punctured tyre
Tyre punctures aren’t always obvious. Some cause a rapid loss of pressure, while others are much slower. If you're unsure whether your tyre is damaged, here are the main signs to watch for:
The tyre looks flatter than usual
Especially after your vehicle has been parked overnight. A deflated tyre may bulge where it touches the ground.
Handling feels different
A puncture can affect how the car steers or brakes, especially at higher speeds.
Your TPMS warning light is on
If your car has a tyre pressure monitoring system, this light should warn you of a sudden drop in pressure.
You hear a ticking or flapping sound
This could be a nail or screw stuck in the tread making contact with the road as the wheel turns.
You spot visible damage
Cuts, embedded objects or bulging on the sidewall are clear signs that something’s wrong.
There’s slow pressure loss
If you need to top up one tyre more often than the others, it might be leaking.
If you observe any of these symptoms, you should get your tyre checked. Even if your vehicle still feels safe to drive, continuing on a damaged tyre can make things worse and could make the tyre unrepairable.
We know how frustrating it is to get an unexpected tyre puncture, which is why we've made our tyre puncture repair service as easy and as convenient to use as possible so you’re never left stranded.
How we repair a punctured or flat tyre
Before every puncture repair, we check for secondary damage, including deformed bead wires, deteriorated tread or rubber, and any other damage caused by grease or a corrosive fluid. We also check the marking of the interior rubber and look for any other signs of excessive wear to ensure that the tyre can be repaired safely.
If your tyre cannot be repaired to meet British Standard BS159, we will not carry out any work.

FAQs - Puncture repair
Punctures can be repaired if the damage is within the tread area and the tyre hasn’t suffered structural damage. We follow British Standard BSAU159 to make sure the repair is safe. If the sidewall is damaged or the rubber has separated, we’ll recommend a replacement instead. We also recommend this if the tread is excessively worn.
ATS Euromaster strives to repair run-flat tyres whenever possible without compromising your safety, and we will carefully assess each tyre for damage or age-related wear. Unfortunately, not all run-flat tyres are repairable as any damage to the reinforced sidewalls could be hidden. As a result, our experienced, qualified technicians will carry out a full evaluation to decide whether a repair is possible. Find out more about our range of Runflat tyres here.
There is never a convenient time to get a flat tyre, but if it happens, try to get your car to a safe place away from traffic. If you have a spare tyre (or a puncture repair kit, which are becoming more common) and you feel that you can repair or replace the wheel yourself, change the wheel and bring your car to your nearest ATS Euromaster. There, we’ll be able to check your tyre for damage and see whether we can repair it.
Most puncture repair kits are designed as a temporary solution so that you can at least get your car to a nearby garage. It will definitely not last as long as a professionally repaired tyre. Similarly, many spare tyres are only designed to be used for limited mileage and speeds. So, once the spare has been fitted to your car, we recommend bringing it straight to us so we can assess your damaged tyre.
If the damage is minor and repaired correctly, the tyre can last until the tread wears out naturally. The key is to catch the puncture early and avoid driving on it while flat. Obviously, it should be done by a trained professional as a poor repair or driving on a deflated tyre will shorten its lifespan.
Prices can vary depending on your vehicle and the location of the repair. To get an accurate quote, contact your nearest ATS Euromaster centre. Our technicians will assess the damage and confirm the cost before any work is done.
Yes, as long as the repair was done properly and the tyre is in good condition. A professionally repaired tyre should perform just like any other roadworthy tyre. If there’s any concern about the tyre’s safety, our technicians will always recommend a replacement instead.
Not always. If the remaining tyre on the same axle is in good condition and has similar tread depth, it may be fine to replace just one of them. But if there’s a big difference in wear, fitting a matching pair helps maintain handling and even braking. Our team can check and advise what’s safest for your vehicle.
Plug: seals the hole from the outside but doesn’t always fix internal damage.
Patch: applied inside the tyre to seal the hole from within.
Mushroom: combines both methods. A stem fills the hole and a patch seals it internally. It’s the most reliable option for long-term use and is the method our technicians use whenever possible.
